Giving out hot tea and good advice

We’re helping people find out if they qualify for energy saving improvements with the ECO scheme.

If you live in Sunderland, Nottingham, Gateshead and Leeds, hopefully you had chance to visit one of our Snug Hubs and enjoy a hot cup of tea with the lovely Rachel Riley. Rachel and the npower team have been offering hot drinks and energy saving advice as part of our #actsofwarmness campaign. If you missed them they’ll be at the Bullring in Birmingham from the 19th – 23rd November and Barkers Pool in Sheffield from the 4th -7th December.

Aside from giving out piping hot tea, they’ve been helping people find ways to make their homes warmer this winter. One such way is through the Energy Company Obligation (ECO) scheme – a government-led plan that’s designed to make the UK’s homes more efficient. If you’re eligible you could get help paying for energy saving improvements like cavity wall or loft insulation, or a brand new A-rated boiler. In some cases you could even get them for free.

Who’s eligible for ECO?

You’re most likely to benefit if you’re live in certain areas of the country, in a house that’s hard to insulate or keep warm, or you receive state benefits.

What kind of benefits? Well, to be specific, any of the following:

  • A state pension credit
  • Child Tax Credits, and an annual income of less than £15,860
  • Income-related employment and support allowance
  • Working Tax Credits, and an annual income of £15,860 or less
  • Income support
  • Income-based job seeker’s allowance

As for the areas that are eligible, it tends to be based on your postcode. So even if you don’t receive benefits you could still qualify for improvements. And if you live in an older property and you’ve been told it’s not suitable for cavity wall insulation, we might be able to help there, too.

It’s simply a case of calling up and answering a few questions. If you qualify we’ll send an accredited Home Energy Assessor out to measure your home’s energy efficiency, tell you what they’d recommend and talk you through the process.

Think your home could do with warming up a little this winter? Call us on 0800 072 1740 or 0330 100 8122* to see what kind of improvements you might qualify for.

*Calling is free on an 0800 number, but charges may vary if you use a mobile. Calling us on an 0330 number will cost you no more than 01 or 02 numbers from landlines or mobiles. If you get ‘inclusive minutes’ with your package, calls on an 0330 number will be part of these.
